WHAT TO DO IN ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar has been a Tourist attraction since early 1980's, a concept that was adopted to replace the foreign currecy flow after the clove's mono-crop economy fell in prices in the world market due to production decline.The Zanzibar StoneTown which occupies an area of 38 hectares, with most historically important building and places reserved has a very clear contrast and can be observed in the use of the buildings consisting of residential, commercial, public and religious functions respectively.

Between 1985 and 1986 Tourism in Zanzibar kicked its peak with the inception of the trade liberalization Policy and the Investment Act respectively, which encouraged and opened the opportunity to the private sector. Today Zanzibar is visited yearly by tourists from all over the world most of whom are repeat guests to the Island.

Zanzibar is an hidden treasure in Tanzania Coast that is unrolling to the world, the beauty of architecture in stonetown, the the quiet private beaches makes the difference in Zanzbar. Stone Town is the heart of Zanzibar Town and is believed to have started at Shangani as a fishing village, then grew outward to the creek, along Darajani Mnazi Mmoja Road which was formally a course waterway separating the town proper and Nga'mbo Quarters.

At stone town the structure of the buildings has great architectural merit and perfectly fit into the surroundings. The walls are built using coral limestone, mixed with lime to form a very hard concrete, then whitewashed at the external.

The ZSTC: Building in which Burton and Speke are believed to have stayed for few days before embarking on their exploration journey into the interior of Africa. It is also the building where the post mortem on Dr. Livingstone's body was conducted perhaps by Dr. John Kirk. Formerly housing offices of the multinational company, Smith & Mackenzie, it is today the headquarters of the Zanzibar State Trading Cooperation.

The Palace Museum
This is a reserved palace of the former Sultans turned into a Museum specializing in the power struggle in the last two centuries. Many ritual and activities took place here and the Photographs and portraits of all Sultans and rulers are displayed.

Belt-el-Ajaib
This is the House of wonders, and the is the tallest building in Stone Town. Its former height is believed to be taller, but it was reduced by the British bombardment in the 1890's. Two Portuguese bronze guns can still be seen in front of the building.

The Central Market
This an historical active market, it is the only place in Zanzibar where almost all spices and fruits of Zanzibar can be seen and also where the multi-racial blend of Zanzibar can be observed. This market was built in 1929.

The Old Fort
This is an open Theatre, and originally used for camping and is close to the Beit el Ajaid. commonly known as "Ngome Kongwe"' and is suspected to have been used by local fishermen, then a chapel was built on it by the portuguese. However, when Arabs took over power it was converted into a garrison and today is an open theatre.

Peace Memorial Museum
This a cultural centre and carries plenty of nice attractive designs and architecture, by Sinclair, in 1925. It is the richest in historical and cultural collections.

And ofcourse the Beaches that includes the Stonetown, Southwes coast, Northcoast, to East.
