Tribes Of Kenya Kenya is a large country with a mixture of different colourful tribes which makes the Nation in a mixtures of many diversity of people and cultures. Kiswahili and English are the two National and official languages in this country with alot of other foreign languages as an additional advantage and career oppotunities. Due to centralization of business, study, work, and hospitalization the capital city and other major cities in Kenya contain a wholesome coctail of cultures from different tribes, but at least each tribe has a path way from where the majority leave and originate from. There are three ethic groups of tribe in Kenya which forms the largest population and consists of Bantus, Nilots, and Cushites among others. Majority of Bantus are to the Central and Eastern part, Nilots to the Western and Cushites to the Northern. Please read on to get enlighted on different diversity in kenya:- Coastal
tribes They are however very respectful and enjoy the most peaceful life of day to day, with most men working while a large number of women are housewives. They commonly grow Palm trees and a few do farming on small scales. Their main Foods include Fish ("papa"), rice, Biriani (spiced rice on thick sauce) and Pilau (Spiced rice) , on "Biribi"(sauce)among other foods. In most cases they have only one heavy meal for lunch, while the dinner is light, mostly tea with bread and enjoys sipping "Kahawa Chungu" mostly in the evenings. Up country tribes The up country tribes consists of the Majority of Kenyans, includes the Western Tribes, Eastern, and Northern tribes, North Eastern and central tribes which, Kikuyu’s, are the majority. Eastern tribes Akamba The Akamba tribe is believed to be the most calm and trustworthy although many refer them as foolish and cowards and sometimes taken advantage of since unlike other tribes, they do not have a history of stealing, but are best known to be Pasionate. A fact that today leaves the Akamba men to be teased around. The Akamba tribe were formerly farmers, Bee keepers, as well as livestock. Their typical food is "Muthokoi" (Meaning grounded maize and beans cooked ),sweet potatoes and "Kikwa"( meaning yam) among other foods. The tribes division of accent is a trademark of which region each come from, Kitui or Machakos. The Akamba from Kitui are mostly feared because a saying exist that they believe in witchcraft and there-fore remain un touchable because of the later, they are however not bad people unless provoked. If someone has stolen or taken anything from you, just tell them you come from Kitui or you will go to Kitui, they will certainly return it back fearing ofcourse! The Akamba tribe belongs to the Bantu’s tribe of Kenya. The Embu and Meru tribe also belong here all with at least similar cultures and tradition if not same. The Embu and Meru tribes are known to be hot tempered but Peaceful. Their languages are almost the same such that one can not talk bad about the other on their presence in their mother tong unless incorrectly spoken. The Embu tribe originally comes from Embu and closeby area while the Meru comes from Meru and respective area. Kikuyu
Tribe Their main dish is "Waru"(meaning Potatoes), Bananas and Githeri among other foods. They also are the most prominent business men around together with Indians. They also live a nomadic life sometimes since they immigrate from one location to another for business, when they do, they carry their families with them unlike any other tribe. |
Western
Kenya Tribes Luo - The Luos are believe to have immigrated to Kenya from Sudan, they are the 3rd largest community in Kenya who are believed to have the strongest cultural behaviors where a man will inherit his brothers wife despite how many women he has, in the event his brother decease’s. Majority of Luos in Kenya Live in Kisumu and closeby area. An history reveals that both Luos and Luyhas have a believe that a woman is not just equal to a man, and that the man is the king in the family/community. However, Luo’s are known to be best Lovers and despite their tradition many Luos intermarry outside their tribes but traditional believes and practices problems will always arise to shutter that marriage at long last. This leaves Luos best for themselves in marriage. They are irresistible but the ending is most likely the same to many who intermarry and or relationships. A common saying goes around here that, a Luo is more important and on demand when he dies! Like many incidents, a fighting is likely to erupt over a dead one, and especially on cases of intermarriage. This is something very common in Luo’s because they will always believe they have all rights even if not legally, because their traditional behaviors/custom comes first. This however doe not stop them from intermarrying with some very lucky. One best known factor is that they are the most genius tribe, they perform well in Education and most Kenyans say because they eat Fish from the closeby fresh water lake Victoria. Their main food is Fish and Ugali , "Omena," among other foods. Majority are of Nilots Ethic. The Kisiis are one calm Isolated tribe in Kenya who mostly have not intermarried with other tribes but only their tribe. Howeverso there are a few intermarriages so far. They are believed to be very hot tempered when provoked. The Kisiis are commonly in Kisii and their typical food is Matoke. They are among the tribes that strongly believe a woman should never address a man authoritatively, and that the men are the kings. They Belomg to the Bantus Ethic. The Luyha tribe is one of the calmest of the Western and their tradition is similar to the Luo’s. Their women work harder than their Men in the community. The tribe is further divided into different Luyha origin and accents, and this accent marks where they come from(region). Unlike the Luos the tribe is not the best in academic and majority still the typical life while others are very advanced. Majority of the Lluyha’s are from Kakamega and closeby areas, through to Bugoma and Busia among other places. Their typicl Food is "Mapuoni"(meaning Sweet potatoes), "Mrere", (green leaves)and Banana among others foods. They only do farming once in a year unlike other tribes of eastern who cultivate(Seasonally) and twice in a year. They are commonly known as trustworthy people but a little behind academically, commonly teased thing about them is their quite undeniable shrub out of their mother toung. A less number is reported on women inheritance but their tradition is similar to the Luos. North
Eastern Tribes The
Northern Tribes Farming is not commonly practiced here while livestock is the commonest practiced. Their Typical food is meat, milk and blood which is sucked from the cows neck at a special ritual. They are commonly known best people for guarding. Their common name is "Hero" meaning greetings in Maasai language) These tribe has no bad records unless initiated to, They are one tribe is kenya that has mentained its custom and tradition and today a major Tourist attraction. They can be very hot tempered if provoked. They always carry a spear and a "rungu" as their trademark especially when in the bush, and with the cattle or outside their territory. Majority of these tribes belong to the Cushites tribe of Kenya. |
